Diagnostic Ultrasounds

An ultrasound is a highly useful tool when evaluating heart conditions, internal organs, cysts and tumors.

Ultrasound Information for Your Pet

Ultrasound uses a narrow beam of high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of your pet’s internal organs and tissues. As the sound waves travel through the body, they are transmitted, reflected, or absorbed by the tissues they encounter. The reflected sound waves return as echoes and are converted into real-time images displayed on a monitor, allowing us to evaluate the area being examined.

One of the greatest benefits of ultrasound is its ability to provide immediate, real-time information about your pet’s health.

What to Expect

Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive, and painless procedure. To obtain the highest-quality images, the area being examined may need to be shaved so the ultrasound probe can make complete contact with the skin.

Most pets tolerate the procedure very well. However, light sedation may occasionally be recommended for anxious or nervous patients to help them remain comfortable and still during the exam.

Preparing for an Abdominal Ultrasound

For abdominal ultrasound examinations:

  • Your pet should fast overnight prior to the appointment unless otherwise directed by your veterinarian.

  • Water may be offered unless instructed otherwise.

  • We will shave a portion of your pet’s abdomen to obtain clear images.

  • During the procedure, your pet will lie comfortably on their back in a padded foam trough.

After the Ultrasound

Once all necessary images and video clips have been obtained, they are submitted to a board-certified veterinary radiologist for interpretation.

In most cases, we receive the specialist’s report within 24 hours. A member of our team will contact you to discuss the results and any recommended next steps.

If more urgent results are needed, a STAT interpretation may be available for an additional fee, with results typically returned within approximately 2 hours.
